Knowledge Quarter Schwentinemündung

Centre for Maritime Research and Technology

Once characterised by the shipbuilding industry and the fish processing sector, this location has since developed into a service and research hub. Key players in the Knowledge Quarter Schwentinemündung are the GEOMAR Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research Kiel (GEOMAR), Kiel University of Applied Sciences (HAW Kiel) and the Centre for Maritime Technology and the Seefischmarkt (ZTS Property Management) as the property manager for the commercial sites.

The Knowledge Quarter focuses on cooperation between science and industry in the field of maritime technologies. Furthermore, the aim is to make intelligent use of the available space, to closely integrate different uses and to enhance the appeal of the outdoor areas. The residential and service buildings currently in the planning stage will complement the site, transforming it into an interesting urban area and a key driver of development for Kiel’s eastern waterfront.

Wischhofstr. 1–3, 24148 Kiel

The Knowledge Quarter Schwentinemündung is situated on the eastern bank of the River Schwentine in Kiel, within the districts of Neumühlen-Dietrichsdorf and Wellingdorf. The quarter is easily accessible via the road network, particularly due to its proximity to the B502.

The Schwentine ferry service also provides excellent connections for pedestrians and cyclists to Kiel’s west bank.

Kiel Central Station is situated in the city centre and can be reached from the Knowledge Quarter in around fifteen minutes.

Urban development plans and strategies for the Knowledge Quarter

One way of pursuing land development in a considered manner is through infill development within existing built-up areas – known as ‘internal development’. This involves utilising the potential of land that is already in use, whilst ensuring that the development is characterised by a distinct conceptual and architectural identity. This approach is particularly relevant for existing inner-city areas.

Against this background, the Kiel City Council adopted the Commercial and Industrial Land Strategy (GIFS) in February 2024. The objectives set out in the strategy are being implemented through specific measures that have also been adopted. The focus of one of these measures is on developing the thematic profile of selected commercial sites within the city. Following the profiling processes at StrandOrt Kiel and in the Grasweg-Eichkamp industrial estate, the Knowledge Quarter Schwentinemündung was the next to be developed last year (2025).

Vision for the Knowledge Quarter Schwentinemündung

The aim is to work with local stakeholders to formulate a vision for the neighbourhood that meets the requirements of a prosperous, innovative and sustainable knowledge district, and to shape the development of the knowledge district in a collaborative and networked manner.

It is important to us that these objectives are developed in collaboration with local stakeholders, building on the neighbourhood’s unique selling points and distinctive characteristics. Both in terms of content and spatial planning, we are pursuing a multidimensional approach to land-use development. In concrete terms, this means strengthening collaborations and jointly shaping knowledge, developing flexible structures, and viewing living and working not as separate but as overlapping spheres.

Highlights from the IMPULS workshop

How can the area at the mouth of the Schwentine be further developed into an innovative, interconnected and forward-looking knowledge district? An IMPULS workshop held in September 2025 addressed precisely this question. It forms the centrepiece of the profiling process on the path towards a sustainable development strategy.

The IMPULS workshop is a semi-public workshop comprising several working phases. Around 30 participants from business, science, public administration, politics and other local stakeholders use the workshop to formulate, share and discuss their perspectives on the neighbourhood.
