Germany’s northernmost federal state is regarded as a beacon of the energy transition and is committed to renewable energy. With hydrogen being the energy carrier of the future, the production, further processing, and use of hydrogen energies along the value chain promises both environmental benefits and economic added value. These key factors drive the development of sustainable and future-oriented growth momentum in Schleswig-Holstein.
Clean Energy Valley Schleswig-Holstein spans the region’s east-west axis from Heide via Rendsburg and Neumünster to Kiel, and represents a forward-looking European region in Germany's "True North."
Additionally, the region boasts comprehensive infrastructure for a sustainable future in energy, innovation, and industry. The strengths of Clean Energy Valley Schleswig-Holstein will be concentrated along this regional axis in the future, particularly in response to growing competition from outside of the region.
CEV SH is not only a future-oriented regional project, but also has the potential to become a European model region: Net-Zero Valley Schleswig-Holstein. This opportunity comes from the Net-Zero Acceleration Valleys established under the Net-Zero Industry Act (NZIA) by the European Commission and the European Parliament.
By signing a joint project agreement, the four key economic development agencies in Schleswig-Holstein have taken a significant step towards the energy transition and the future of Schleswig-Holstein as an industrial hub. Backed by a clear commitment from district administrators, mayors, and local councilmembers, the plans for the Clean Energy Valley Schleswig-Holstein (CEV SH) were officially unveiled.
Recent developments surrounding Northvolt have dampened the strong momentum of recent months. Now is the right time to recalibrate our approach. The Clean Energy Valley offers an opportunity to highlight new prospects and take concrete steps towards a climate-neutral future. It is crucial that we now communicate the project clearly and convincingly.
1. Attracting innovative companies and sustainable industry:
Joint development of intermunicipal commercial and industrial sites, as well as critical infrastructure, along the west–east corridor; and the establishment of innovation and start-up structures, along with strengthening innovation capacity through knowledge and technology transfer.
2. Promoting the Clean Energy Valley region and its opportunities for climate-friendly, forward-looking development: Combine energy and economic strengths as a competitive advantage and present the region externally in partnership with key stakeholders.
3. Connecting partners and industry stakeholders to unlock potential:
Strengthen connections between partners and industry to support workforce development, sustainable growth, and innovation. Position Clean Energy Valley SH as one of Europe’s most attractive and dynamic industrial hubs for energy-intensive companies.
