The four higher education institutions in Kiel (Christian-Albrechts-Universität, HAW - University of Applied Sciences, Muthesius Academy of Fine Arts, and the University of Cooperative Education Schleswig-Holstein) are key factors in the region’s economy.
Building on this strong academic base, we actively connect business and science to promote joint innovation projects, harness synergies, and strengthen existing potential.
Since 2008, the event series "Workshop Science Economy" has been bringing together stakeholders from the worlds of science, business, and public administration to explore the topics of sector coupling from a variety of perspectives. At two to three events each year, current policy developments, industry case studies, and scientific research findings are presented. These are followed by discussions on the topics and the development of new ideas for collaboration.
The aim of "Workshop Science Economy" is to strengthen the exchange between industry and science in order to advance knowledge, technology, and innovation. The KiWi organizes the events in collaboration with the Schleswig-Holstein Society for Energy & Climate Protection, the Schleswig-Holstein Renewable Energy Network Agency,the Schleswig-Holstein Investment Bank and regional economic development agencies from Plön and Rendsburg-Eckernförde. Held at various locations across Schleswig-Holstein, these events often include field trips.
The CAPTN initiative aims to develop environmentally friendly and autonomous transport solutions for local public transport in Kiel and the surrounding area. By developing innovative solutions and creating a network of stakeholders from industry, academia and the public sector, the initiative seeks to establish options for environmentally friendly transport and increase the use of electric vehicles and renewable energy. CAPTN is committed to improving quality of life, reducing CO2 emissions, and positioning the region as a pioneer in sustainable mobility.

Once a year, at "MarDATA Meets Industry", company representatives and future, highly qualified professionals (PhD and Master’s students) come together to discuss potential career opportunities in a relaxed atmosphere and exchange ideas on digital solutions. For maritime data talent from the MarData Helmholtz School for Marine Data Science and other universities and research institutions in Schleswig-Holstein, the event opens up career opportunities in the regional economy.
At the same time, companies gain access to potential future employees and fresh ideas for utilizing maritime data within their organizations. Since 2022, the events have been organized by the KiWi, TransMarTech and the MarData Helmholtz School for Marine Data Science.
