Industry in Kiel

The manufacturing sector is a key pillar of Kiel’s economy. Industry attracts service businesses, provides well-paid jobs, and makes a significant contribution to tax revenue as well as to the local gross value added. Industrial workers possess a wide range of skills, in which we must now work together to expand and strengthen. To this end, it is important to formulate and work towards implementing shared, forward-looking measures and goals.

Kiel’s Defense Industry

The defense industry plays a special role in Kiel’s manufacturing sector. Historically, the development of this sector has been closely linked to Kiel’s status as a naval base. Today, the defense industry is primarily a complex high-tech sector in which technical innovation plays a major role. There are around 5,600 jobs across 15 companies in Kiel. Further information can be found in Kiel’s position paper on the defense industry (only in German).

Kiel Industry Conference

What challenges does industry face today? What can we do together to ensure that Kiel’s businesses remain future-proof and competitive? How important are sustainability, digitalisation and Industry 4.0 to Kiel’s businesses, and how can they develop further? And how important is the defence industry for the region? These and other questions were addressed by participants at the first Kiel Industry Conference in October 2022.

The Importance of the Manufacturing Sector

Only 12.7 percent of companies in Kiel belong to the manufacturing sector. Nevertheless, in June 2022, the sector employed 15.4 percent of all employees subject to social insurance contributions, as well as 23.8 percent of all turnover. On average, the turnover of manufacturing companies in Kiel in 2021 stood at just over €4.5 million, while all Kiel-based companies averaged just under €2.4 million. These figures highlight the economic significance of this sector.

In addition, a European Parliament study calculated that one job in industry generates up to three jobs in the service sector. Just over 1,000 companies with more than 18,000 employees belong to the manufacturing sector in Kiel, with the main sectors in the state capital being the maritime economy, railway technology, mechanical engineering, the defense industry, and the healthcare sector.

A Project Management Tool

Putting ideas into practice – but how?

Over 80% of businesses in Kiel have fewer than 10 employees, who are primarily occupied with their day-to-day operations. Small and micro-enterprises rarely have professional project managers. To help these businesses successfully bring ideas to fruition, KiWi designed a series of posters, following the 1st Kiel Industry Conference, specifically to provide support in this area. Step by step, the printable posters guide users through the process of implementing ideas in a simple, self-explanatory, and well-structured manner.
