In the view of Kiel's Mayor Dr. Samet Yilmaz, the announcement by Federal Minister of Defence Boris Pistorius that a Bundeswehr innovation centre for maritime systems is to be established in Kiel sends a strong signal for Kiel as a location and for the north of the country as a whole.
“This decision demonstrates the potential that Kiel has as a hub for maritime science, technology and innovation. The close links between the navy, research, universities, start-ups and industry make our city unique in Germany,” explains Yilmaz.
The planned innovation centre is intended to bring new maritime technologies into practical application more quickly – including in the fields of autonomous systems, sensor technology, artificial intelligence and maritime safety technologies.
"For years, Kiel has been synonymous with maritime expertise and technological innovation. Now, this strength is also being officially recognised at national level. This provides a significant boost to research, development and high-quality jobs in our city."
Yilmaz also highlights the importance of responsible urban development: “Decisions like these bring with them greater responsibility and higher expectations. It is crucial that economic development, scientific progress and the interests of the people in our city are considered together. We want to actively shape this development – transparently, through dialogue and with clear added value for Kiel.”
The Lord Mayor particularly highlights the role of the existing innovation network “Tech Hub SVI Nord”, which has been strengthening cooperation between academia, industry and the German Armed Forces in the field of maritime technologies since 2025.
“Kiel can become a key European hub for maritime security and future technologies. We have excellent conditions for this – from our universities, through Geomar and research institutions, to our shipyards and innovative companies,” said Yilmaz. The state capital, Kiel, will constructively support the ongoing development process and further develop opportunities for science, business and employment in close cooperation with partners from the federal, state and regional levels.

ISO 27001, NIS2 or DORA – many companies are familiar with the requirements, but the path to compliance is often a struggle. Instead of clear processes, Excel spreadsheets, a variety of tools and a great deal of manual work dominate. This costs time and patience, and rarely provides the necessary overview.
